Our Story

MycoTechnology's short but interesting history starts with our Director of Mycology, Dr. Brooks Kelly. Kelly has spent the better part of three decades researching and studying mushrooms. His original focus on food and nutraceuticals led to ground breaking new technologies.


In early 2012, Kelly met a chemist named Jim Langan who was fascinated by his ideas and sought to build a business with him. In the months to follow, Kelly and Langan brought their plan to Pete Lubar, a successful business man with a diverse background in various industries. Lubar was intrigued by the idea and went to long time business partner Alan Hahn to see if the idea was fundable.


Hahn and Lubar joined the venture in early March of 2013 and shortly thereafter MycoTechnology Inc., was born. Over the next four months they perfected their techniques to prove the concept on coffee in the basement of Kelly’s home. Working in a make-shift clean room with limited equipment and supplies they were able to produce a coffee product that they hoped would impress the industry. The fate of the company came down to a single taste testing in mid-July of 2013. A panel of professional coffee roasters and connoisseurs tried the coffee and were impressed by the transformation, calling the coffee “brighter” and “noticeably less bitter.”


With the success of the proof of concept, the company rapidly began to grow and by the end of 2013 they had raised money and moved out of the basement and into the Fitzsimmons Bioscience facility in Aurora, Colorado. At the new facility they expanded their research and development and applied the techniques to several other agricultural substrates with substantial success. By November of 2014 they had outgrown their facility and moved into a substantially larger facility in Colorado.


Over the next year and a half MycoTechnology worked to refine their craft and perfect their products. In July of 2015 MycoTechnology closed their Series A financing round for $9.2M led by S2G Ventures with participation from Seventures Partners and Middleland Capital.


Today, MycoTechnology is working with some of the largest companies in the world, using their mushroom technology to help solve some of the toughest challenges faced by several industries.
